A Time for Everything | | [ Ecclesiastes 3:1 - 3:14 ] - hymn455 | | There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.
Ecclesiastes 3:1
| While flying recently, I watched a mother and her children a few rows ahead of me. While the toddler played contentedly, the mother gazed into the eyes of her newborn, smiling at him and stroking his cheek. He stared back with a wide-eyed wonderment. I enjoyed the moment with a touch of wistfulness, thinking of my own children at that age and the season that has passed me by.
I reflected, however, about King Solomon’s words in the book of Ecclesiastes about “every activity under the heavens”(v. 1). He addresses through a series of opposites how there is a “time for everything”(v. 1): “a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot”(v. 2). Perhaps King Solomon in these verses despairs at what he sees as a meaningless cycle of life. But he also acknowledges the role of God in each season, that our work is a “gift of God”(v. 13) and that “everything God does will endure forever”(v. 14).
We may remember times in our lives with longing, like me thinking of my children as babies. We know, however, that the Lord promises to be with us in every season of our life(Isa. 41:10). We can count on His presence and find that our purpose is in walking with Him. Amy Boucher Pye

2. a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3. a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
4. a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5. a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
6. a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7. a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8. a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.
9. What does the worker gain from his toil?
10. I have seen the burden God has laid on men.
11. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
12. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live.
13. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil -- this is the gift of God.
14. I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him. |

전도서 3:1
| 최근 비행기를 탔을 때 나보다 몇 줄 앞에 있던 한 엄마와 아이들을 보았습니다. 아장아장 걷는 어린아이가 즐겁게 놀고 있는 동안, 그 엄마는 갓 태어난 아기의 눈을 바라보고 미소 지으며 그의 뺨을 만졌습니다. 갓난아기는 큰 눈을 동그랗게 뜨고 엄마를 바라보았습니다. 그 나이 때의 우리 아이들과 이미 내 곁을 스쳐 가버린 그 시절을 생각하며, 한줄기 아쉬움과 더불어 잠깐 동안 즐거운 시간을 가졌습니다.
그러다가 나에게 전도서에 있는 솔로몬 왕의 “천하 만사”에 관한 말이 떠올랐습니다(1절). 그는 일련의 대조를 통해 “범사에 기한”이 있음을 설명하고 있습니다(1절). “날 때가 있고 죽을 때가 있으며 심을 때가 있고 심은 것을 뽑을 때가 있으며”(2절). 어쩌면 이 구절에서 솔로몬 왕은 의미 없이 돌고 도는 인생에 대해 절망하고 있는 것인지도 모릅니다. 하지만 그러면서도 그는 우리의 수고가 “하나님의 선물”(13절)이며, “하나님께서 행하시는 모든 것은 영원히 있을 것이라”(14절)라고 하며 각 시기에 하나님이 하시는 역할을 인정하고 있습니다.
내가 우리 아이들의 아기 시절을 생각했던 것처럼, 우리는 인생의 어떤 시기를 그리워하며 추억할 때가 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 주님이 우리 삶의 모든 때에 같이 하겠다고 약속하신 것을(사 41:10) 알고 있습니다. 우리는 주님이 함께 계심을 믿을 수 있고, 우리의 목적이 주님과 동행하는 데 있다는 것을 알 수 있게 됩니다.

5. 돌을 던져 버릴 때가 있고 돌을 거둘 때가 있으며 안을 때가 있고 안는 일을 멀리 할 때가 있으며
6. 찾을 때가 있고 잃을 때가 있으며 지킬 때가 있고 버릴 때가 있으며
7. 찢을 때가 있고 꿰맬 때가 있으며 잠잠할 때가 있고 말할 때가 있으며
8. 사랑할 때가 있고 미워할 때가 있으며 전쟁할 때가 있고 평화할 때가 있느니라
9. 일하는 자가 그의 수고로 말미암아 무슨 이익이 있으랴
10. 하나님이 인생들에게 노고를 주사 애쓰게 하신 것을 내가 보았노라
11. 하나님이 모든 것을 지으시되 때를 따라 아름답게 하셨고 또 사람들에게는 영원을 사모하는 마음을 주셨느니라 그러나 하나님이 하시는 일의 시종을 사람으로 측량할 수 없게 하셨도다
12. 사람들이 사는 동안에 기뻐하며 선을 행하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 없는 줄을 내가 알았고
13. 사람마다 먹고 마시는 것과 수고함으로 낙을 누리는 그것이 하나님의 선물인 줄도 또한 알았도다
14. 하나님께서 행하시는 모든 것은 영원히 있을 것이라 그 위에 더 할 수도 없고 그것에서 덜 할 수도 없나니 하나님이 이같이 행하심은 사람들이 그의 앞에서 경외하게 하려 하심인 줄을 내가 알았도다 |
