| [ Luke 18:35 - 18:43 ] - hymn 363 Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!
Some years ago a traveling companion noticed I was straining to see objects at a distance. What he did next was simple but life changing. He took off his glasses and said, “Try these.” When I put his glasses on, surprisingly my blurred vision cleared up. Eventually I went to an optometrist who prescribed glasses to correct my vision problem.
Today’s reading in Luke 18 features a man with no vision at all, and living in total darkness had forced him to beg for a living. News about Jesus, the popular teacher and miracle worker, had reached the blind beggar’s ears. So when Jesus’s travel route took Him by where the blind man was sitting, hope was ignited in his heart. “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”(v. 38) he called. Though without sight physically, the man possessed spiritual insight into Jesus’s true identity and faith in Him to meet his need. Compelled by this faith, “He shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’”(v. 39). The result? His blindness was banished, and he went from begging for his living to blessing God because he could see(v. 43).
In moments or seasons of darkness, where do you turn? Upon what or to whom do you call? Eyeglass prescriptions help improve vision, but it’s the merciful touch of Jesus, God’s Son, that brings people from spiritual darkness to light. Arthur Jackson

몇 년 전 여행을 하다가 일행 중 한 사람이 내가 먼데 있는 것이 잘 안 보여 고생하는 것을 알고는 아주 간단한 일을 했는데, 그것이 내 삶을 바꾸어놓았습니다. 그는 자신의 안경을 벗어서 “한번 써보세요”라고 했습니다. 그의 안경을 쓰는 순간 희미했던 나의 시야가 놀랍게도 깨끗해졌습니다. 나중에 나는 안과에 가서 시력 검사를 하고 안경을 맞추어 쓰게 되었습니다.
오늘의 말씀인 누가복음 18장에는 날 때부터 보지 못하고 캄캄한 세상에서 구걸하며 살아야 했던 한 남자의 이야기가 나옵니다. 널리 알려진 선생님이자 기적을 행하신다는 예수님에 관한 소식은 이 눈 먼 걸인의 귀에까지 전해졌습니다. 그래서 예수님이 그가 앉아 있는 곳을 지난다는 것을 알게 된 맹인의 가슴은 희망의 불길로 타올랐습니다. 그는 외쳤습니다. “다윗의 자손 예수여 나를 불쌍히 여기소서”(38절). 비록 육신의 눈으로는 볼 수 없어도 영적인 눈으로 예수님이 진정 누구이신가를 알았던 그는 예수님이 자기 문제를 해결해주실 것을 믿었고, 이런 믿음을 가지고 더욱 크게 소리쳤습니다. “다윗의 자손이여 나를 불쌍히 여기소서”(39절). 그 결과 어떻게 되었습니까? 안 보이던 눈이 치유되고, 볼 수 있게 됨으로 말미암아 살기 위해 구걸하던 그가 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 되었습니다(43절).
살면서 캄캄한 순간이나 캄캄한 시기를 지날 때 당신은 어디에 의지합니까? 무엇에게, 누구에게 외칩니까? 눈이 잘 안 보이면 안경을 쓰면 됩니다. 그러나 영적으로 캄캄한 사람을 빛으로 이끌어내는 것은 바로 하나님의 아들 예수님의 사랑의 손길입니다.
