Zephaniah 3:17 Years ago, I attended a wedding where two people from different countries got married. Such a blending of cultures can be beautiful, but this ceremony included Christian traditions mixed with rituals from a faith that worshiped many gods. Zephaniah the prophet pointedly condemned the mixing of other religions with faith in the one true God(sometimes called syncretism). Judah had become a people who bowed in worship to the true God but who also relied on the god Molek(Zephaniah 1:5). Zephaniah described their adoption of pagan culture(v. 8) and warned that as a result God would drive the people of Judah from their homeland. Yet God never stopped loving His people. His judgment was to show them their need to turn to Him. So Zephaniah encouraged Judah to “Seek righteousness, seek humility”(2:3). Then the Lord gave them tender words promising future restoration: “At that time I will gather you; at that time I will bring you home”(3:20). It’s easy to condemn examples of obvious syncretism like the wedding I attended. But in reality, all of us easily blend God’s truth with the assumptions of our culture. We need the Holy Spirit’s guidance to test our beliefs against the truth of God’s Word and then to stand for that truth confidently and lovingly. Our Father warmly embraces anyone who worships Him in the Spirit and in truth(see John 4:23–24). Tim Gustafson [ 스바냐 1:1 - 1:6 ] - 찬송가 219 장 너를 잠잠히 사랑하시며 너로 말미암아 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하시리라 스바냐 3:17 오래 전에 서로 다른 나라 출신의 두 사람이 하는 결혼식에 참석했습니다. 이렇게 문화가 합쳐지는 것은 아름다운 일일 수 있지만, 이 결혼식은 기독교 의식에다 여러 신을 섬기는 신앙에서 나온 의식이 한데 섞여 있었습니다. 스바냐 선지자는 유일하신 참 하나님을 믿는 신앙과 다른 종교를 섞는 것(가끔 혼합주의라고 불립니다)을 분명히 죄라고 했습니다. 유다 백성은 참 하나님께 경배를 드리면서도 동시에 말감이라는 신을 의지했습니다(습 1:5). 스바냐는 그들이 이방 문화를 받아들이는 것을 묘사하며(8절) 이 때문에 하나님이 유다 백성을 그들의 땅에서 쫓아낼 것이라고 경고하였습니다. 그럼에도 하나님은 그의 백성을 사랑하지 않으신 적이 없습니다. 하나님의 징계는 백성을 그에게로 돌아오게 하려는 것이었습니다. 그래서 스바냐는 유다 백성들에게 “공의와 겸손을 구하라”(2:3)고 했습니다. 그 후에 하나님은 따뜻한 말로 장래에 그들을 회복시키실 것이라 약속하셨습니다. “내가 그 때에 너희를 이끌고 그 때에 너희를 모을지라”(3:20). 내가 갔던 결혼식에서처럼 분명히 드러나 보이는 혼합주의는 비판하기가 쉽습니다. 그러나 사실 우리 모두는 쉽게 하나님의 진리와 이 세상 문화의 가치를 대수롭지 않게 섞어가며 살고 있습니다. 우리는 성령님의 도우심으로 우리의 믿음이 하나님의 진리의 말씀에 맞는지 시험해보고 그 진리를 확신과 사랑의 마음으로 지켜야 합니다. 우리 하나님 아버지는 성령과 진리로 예배드리는 사람은 누구나 다 따뜻하게 맞아주십니다(요 4:23-24 참조).

I will cut off from this place every remnant of Baal, the names of the pagan and the idolatrous priests -- 5. those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host, those who bow down and swear by the LORD and who also swear by Molech, 6. those who turn back from following the LORD and neither seek the LORD nor inquire of him. • 문제를 만날 때 나는 어디로 향하는가? 위기에 처해 보면 내가 무엇을 믿는지 알 수 있네. 내 믿음은 온전히 하나님께 있는가? 오늘 나는 하나님께 무엇을 넘겨드려야 하나? 하나님은 용서하시고 회복시켜주실 준비가 항상 되어 있다. 1. 아몬의 아들 유다 왕 요시야의 시대에 스바냐에게 임한 여호와의 말씀이라 스바냐는 히스기야의 현손이요 아마랴의 증손이요 그다랴의 손자요 구시의 아들이었더라 2. ○여호와께서 이르시되 내가 땅 위에서 모든 것을 진멸하리라 3. 내가 사람과 짐승을 진멸하고 공중의 새와 바다의 고기와 거치게 하는 것과 악인들을 아울러 진멸할 것이라 내가 사람을 땅 위에서 멸절하리라 나 여호와의 말이니라 4. 내가 유다와 예루살렘의 모든 주민들 위에 손을 펴서 남아 있는 바알을 그 곳에서 멸절하며 그마림이란 이름과 및 그 제사장들을 아울러 멸절하며 5. 또 지붕에서 하늘의 뭇 별에게 경배하는 자들과 경배하며 여호와께 맹세하면서 말감을 가리켜 맹세하는 자들과 6. 여호와를 배반하고 따르지 아니한 자들과 여호와를 찾지도 아니하며 구하지도 아니한 자들을 멸절하리라
